Growing up on the bayous
of the Mississippi River south of New Orleans, Turk gained a love
and appreciation for the great outdoors. Hunting and fishing
are his passion. In New Orleans he was a member of a Hunting
Club that many of his friends, the judges, lawyers and politicians
belonged to. He greatly misses the companionship, the fun
times, and most of all, the freezer full of meat!
October, 2006, Turk was
dealt another blow when his boss, Mr. Meyers, died. Turk's
father died when he was young, and Mr. Meyers had become like a
father to him. Together they had been business partners and
confidants. We were fortunate to meet Mr. Meyers, and at the
age of 95 his mind was sharp as he still practiced law in New
Orleans.
Turk's phone rings often
with calls from his 9 grown children, his nieces and nephews, and
many friends. Now that the trauma has subsided to some extent,
his sense of humor is coming through. He is much more relaxed
loves to joke and tell stories of his very eventful life.
As a Master Chef, his
kitchen often emanates with wonderful aromas. He loves to cook
and share his delicacies with his friends, and his freezer is
stocked with cartons of Gumbo waiting to be sold or given away.
He is very secretive about his recipes, and if you ask, he is likely
to tell you that his secret ingredient is used motor oil.
Turk loves the children,
and he would be very lost without them. They ride bikes
together, go fishing, spend afternoons at the park, swim in their
little backyard pool, and when night comes they eat popcorn while
they watch their favorite movies. During the school year, Turk
and Chip would go to the school and peek in the classrooms to see
what the kids were doing. Little Chip knew his way to each
classroom where he would find his brother and sisters.
It will be a day of great
celebration when Turk gains custody of the kids. Then, he
says, he will be able to sleep at night! Stay tuned . . .
